Today is Friday the thirteenth.
Sounds ominous, right? We are accustomed to consider this day the most dangerous, satanic and unfavorable.
This is mainly due to biblical parables – the thirteenth member of the Last Supper (Judas) betrayed Christ, on Friday the crucifixion took place, on Friday, according to some versions, Adam and Eve were expelled from paradise.
The number “thirteen” is completely discredited all over the world: they exclude the thirteenth floors, the thirteenth rooms in hotels, the thirteenth rows and seats in airplanes.
The thirteenth Arcana in the Tarot also sounds and looks frightening (I’m not talking about interpretation). And everything seems to be stupid, but these superstitions could not have arisen from scratch? What do you think?
As for me, I never single out this day as any special one and do not collect rituals and beliefs tied specifically to this date, but it became curious what they say about this in general.

To make this day successful and not bring any trouble, start it with pleasantness. Namely, from a cup of hot cocoa or chocolate, adding cinnamon, vanilla and other favorite spices to it.
We drink the “potion”, the sediment that happens at the bottom after cocoa, wash it into the sink, imagining how all the possible troubles of this day disappear along with the sediment.
Many people praise all kinds of money rituals on this day. Almost all are connected with church candles, amulets and appeal to holy angels.
You can also, for example, buy a new wallet and move into it (but the old one is best thrown away, thus getting rid of past financial troubles). Or buy some kind of magical thing – a money tree, Chinese coins or a three-legged frog.
Another part of money rituals is associated with planting plants.
We put 13 coins on the bottom of the pot, cover it with earth, plant a plant and wait for the growth of financial well-being.
However, there is an opinion that planting and gardening on this day should not be done at all. But it’s up to you to decide.
Here is also a list of things to do on Friday the thirteenth is strictly not recommended:
- go on a long journey
- perform medical operations
- look in the mirror for a long time and even more so, break it
- do not start new large projects
- lend money
- hold important meetings and organize holidays (although I would argue about holidays)
In 2023, we are waiting for two such Fridays – today and October 13th.
How do you feel about this popular date? What signs and rituals do you know?
Have a great weekend everyone and happy Friday!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this interesting topic. I believe that many beliefs like the Friday the 13th and 13 being unlucky may come from the human desire to always assign an external source to inexplicable happenings. Knowing there is an “unseen” somehow necessitates furnishing an explanation – so, in my experience, there is often some basis in “fact” to an oft-repeated belief and all must be reviewed with our inner spirit and filed accordingly by each one of us. Judging and/or dismissing without review is never a good idea in my opinion.
I don’t find this date any different from any other dates. 😀
13 is actually a lucky number in the eastern world. It’s associated with stories of humility, abundance, gratitude, and sharing.
I was admitted to the hospital on Friday the 13th. But I belief more in coincidence than bad karma or sinful living.
